Solarcar CAN LCD Display & Bridge

The Tritium CAN bridge provided an interface between the M12 connection used in other solarcar products and the ribbon cable used by the LCD displays.

IQ Battery Management System

The IQ System is an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) for any type of lithium-chemistry battery packs. It is comprised of a single battery pack master controller connected to multiple cell management modules. The units function together to protect and control the entire battery pack.

Without the BMS a high-voltage battery pack is at risk of operating outside of specified limits, potentially leading to complete failure of the individual cells. The Tritium BMS eliminates this risk, by reliably monitoring each cell and maintaining operation within the set limits. It can also completely disconnect the battery pack if any voltage or temperature limit is exceeded.

The IQ BMS is a full battery management system, not just a battery monitoring system. During the charge cycle, the Tritium BMS is capable of bypassing fully-charged cells – providing a top-of-charge balance for the entire battery pack and overcoming cell differences due to age and manufacturing variations.

Cell Management Unit (CMU)

The Tritium CMU suits any lithium cell chemistry of any form factor, as the threshold voltages are user-configurable and a simple wiring harness is used to connect the node to the cells. Each node can monitor between one and eight cells, and is powered from the network, not the cells themselves, so the BMS itself does not contribute to cell leakage and imbalance.

Battery pack Management Unit (BMU)

The BMU is a bridge between the CMUs and the vehicle communication bus. It controls the pre-charge and main contactors of the battery pack as well as collating the telemetry data from the nodes and providing a summary to other components on the vehicle CAN bus.

EV Driver Controls

The EV Driver Controls is the bridge between the driver and vehicle’s CAN bus. It accepts the driver’s input, displays feedback on the vehicle’s gauges and communicates with the powertrain via the CAN bus. We understand the need for flexibility surrounding these issues – as different vehicles have different driver controls and gauges, and different vehicle designers want different interfaces. In order to meet all these needs we have made both the hardware and the firmware for our driver controls completely open source.

Most functional modifications to the driver controls can be achieved by small changes to the microcontroller firmware. As such, we recommend using our hardware solution as a starting point for your own implementation.

Tritium LCD Display

Tritium’s LCD display provides a simple way to read almost any type of data on the CAN Bus.

We provide open-source firmware for this product, so that you can modify it to suit your requirements. Schematics are also available, to allow you to understand the hardware you are using — we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get up and running with our motor drive system.

The LCD display is designed to mount flush in to a dashboard. However, it does require a cut-out behind the display for the circuit board and the two 6 way MicroFit headers for CAN in and CAN out.

The Tritium LCD display has the following features:
