WaveSculptor Solarcar System

The WaveSculptor is an off-the-shelf hardware solution for light electric vehicle drive systems, combining advanced three phase inverter technology with a powerful user interface. This system was used by one third of the field in the World Solar Challenge 2007, powering six of these teams to a top ten finish. The success of the WaveSculptor technology is founded on a long history of research and development in the solar vehicle racing industry, which started back in 1999, when the directors of Tritium were racing solar cars themselves (check out our history).

The major component in the system is the WaveSculptor motor controller, a 20kVA 160Volt 100Amp three phase permanent magnet motor controller with a CAN bus interface. This sized motor controller is ample to drive a 250kg solarcar with a direct drive transmission. It would also potentially be suitable for a <750kg electric vehicle with a four speed gear box. For more details on how the system works together, please refer to our CAN bus engineering reference (650kB PDF).

Tritium acknowledges the contribution of the Queensland Government, through the Queensland Sustainable Energy Innovation Fund (QSEIF), which has enabled this project to proceed.
