IQcell Battery Management System

Description

The IQcell System is an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) comprised of a battery Pack Master controller and multiple cell mangement nodes. They function together to control the vehicle battery pack.

The individual cells in an unmonitored high voltage battery pack are susceptible to being taken outside their specified voltage range, leading to complete failure of the cell. The Tritium BMS eliminates this risk, by reliably monitoring each cell voltage and allowing the vehicle to gracefully reduce performance as any cell approaches the limits. The BMS can also completely disconnect the battery pack if any limit is exceeded, including for under voltage, over voltage, and over temperature.

Being a full Battery Management System, not just a monitoring system, the Tritium BMS nodes are also capable of limiting individual cell voltages during the charge cycle by shunting current around fully charged cells. This provides a top-of-charge balance for the battery pack, counteracting the differences in the cell's leakage currents due to age and manufacturing tolerances.

BMS Node

The Tritium BMS nodes suit any lithium cell chemistry of any form factor, as the threshold voltages are user-configurable and a simple wiring harness is used to connect the node to the cells.

Each node can monitor between one and eight cells, and is powered from the network, not the cells themselves, so the BMS itself does not contribute to cell leakage and imbalance.
